MedAC/JEMPAC: Who are we?

MedAc LogoThe Medical Society of New Jersey’s political action committees, MedAC and JEMPAC, are the single largest political voice representing New Jersey physicians and the patients they serve. MedAC, which makes contributions to state candidates and leadership committees, and JEMPAC, which makes contributions to federal candidates, accept voluntary contributions for the purpose of making bipartisan direct political contributions to state and federal candidates who share the vision of enhancing physicians’ ability to provide quality healthcare in our diverse state. By combining our financial resources we speak with a louder voice.

Who decides which Candidates MedAC and JEMPAC Support?  The MedAC/JEMPAC Board of Directors are physicians appointed by the President of the MSNJ and approved by its Board of Trustees. The MedAC/JEMPAC Board currently consists of 50 physicians (from around the state) and the officers, Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer, are chosen annually. The Board consists entirely of physicians who are responsible for raising contributions to MedAC and JEMPAC as well as deciding which candidates receive support.

How Does the MedAC JEMPAC Board decide who to support?   The MedAC/JEMPAC Board votes to support bipartisan candidates who understand the issues affecting healthcare today. Board members consider a candidates personal philosophy as well as a candidate’s record on pro-medicine issues. The MedAC/JEMPAC Board also makes recommendations to the American Medical Political Action Committee (AMPAC), which is affiliated with the American Medical Association, for the support of New Jersey Congressional and Senate candidates.

Contributions to MedAC/AMPAC are not deductible for federal income tax purposes.  Voluntary political contributions by individuals to MedAC/AMPAC should be written on personal checks.  Funds from corporations will be used for political education activities and/or state election activities where allowed.  Contributions are not limited to suggested amounts.  $100 of the suggested contribution amount is transmitted to AMPAC for physicians and $10 for a student or resident.  Neither the AMA nor its constituent state associations will favor or disadvantage anyone based upon the amounts of or failure to make PAC contributions.  Voluntary political contributions are subject to limitations of FEC regulations.
